Kaahal Home — a treasure trove in the heart of Tulum along Mexico’s Riviera Maya

Our new feature in the “Global Sourcing” series is the incredible home and fashion destination: Kaahal Home Tulum, curated by seasoned art, design and culture curator, Giuli Cordara.

Morpholio was thrilled to visit Kaahal to see the collection in person and get the background on the goods. Guili and her team source from all over Mexico, bringing pottery, textiles, fixtures and art made by everyone from artisans to professionals, always championing a singular theme: authenticity of product and process.

At the time of our visit, intricate Michoacán textiles sat between traditional El Palomar Stonewear, Mogote Pottery and photography by environmentalist Alejandro Durán. The combination of ancient techniques and contemporary style is intoxicating at every level.

Traditional textiles, baskets and lanterns pair well with art by renowned photographer Alejandro Durán.

“When I think that contemporary art, produced in replica, can be sold for millions of dollars, I’m amazed. Local artisans are so talented, every piece is unique. From the material research, dye and fabrication to its pure sense of color and composition, Mexican style is a delightful relief from the drab “apartment” grey aesthetic that is so hip today.” —Giuli Cordara, Curator and Creator

Mogote Pottery is said to be the “best in Mexico” with stunning colors, shapes & glazes.

Giuli brings work from incredibly talented artisans to a mass market, collaboriting with them to choose color combos and styles that work for today’s home. Combining fine natural materials, such as wool from Andean sheep, each piece is a work of art in and of itself. And yet, the price points are much more accessible. She is helping to preserve and promote craft and values that could easily be lost in the world of fast fashion and decor.

Traditional Mayan textiles use geometric patterns wheras the Spanish introduced floral and circular motifs. Both remain a point of pride in Mexico.
